what happens in psychotherapy?

During the course of your psychotherapy you and I will explore all aspects of your life: past and current relationships, early experiences, thoughts, feelings, anxieties, memories, dreams and fantasies. The therapy takes place in a safe, confidential and supportive environment. I offer skilled understanding and support throughout the process. The therapy can enable you to become more aware of what you are repeating from your past, how you might leave this behind, and lead to a deeper understanding and acceptance of yourself.

Sessions usually take place once a week and last 50 minutes. More frequent sessions may be possible. You can engage in psychotherapy for as long as may be useful; this can be months or several years, depending on individual needs.

what happens in counselling?

The process is very similar to that of psychotherapy though may be shorter-term with the focus on a particular issue identified during the initial meeting, for example a bereavement.

If Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is thought to be most useful to you then this process will also involve you carrying out homework exercises relating to the difficulty we are working with.

CBT is based on the idea that the way we think influences how we feel and behave in certain situations. It has been clinically proven to help with depression, stress, anxiety and phobias. During the session we will examine and challenge your thinking patterns and behaviours. This work is best for specific issues and is usually short-term (12-20 weeks).
